Chance To Shine

Bringing the benefits of cricket back to state schools.

The Cricket Foundation launched Chance to shine in May 2005 and set out to bring competitive cricket - and its educational benefits - back to at least a third of the country’s state schools over a ten year period.

Chance to shine is a £50million national campaign that relies on corporate and individual charitable donations. To sustain the programme and achieve its target of reaching at least two million state school children by 2015, we need to raise £25million privately which the Government has pledged to match pound for pound.

Chance to shine is delivered through individual projects across England and Wales. Each project provides a structured coaching and competition programme for a group of around six primary and secondary state schools. The group of schools is supported by professional, qualified coaches engaged by one local cricket club.

Each project is funded for a minimum period of five years and once it’s ended, we work closely with schools and clubs to help them sustain cricket activities.

ASDA Kwik Cricket

ASDA Kwik Cricket is a game aimed at primary school children, played between teams of 8 players, all of whom bat, bowl and field. The batting side starts with 200 runs and bats in 4 pairs. Each pair receives 2 overs and has unlimited lives. Each time a batter is out, 5 runs are deducted. Each player bowls one over of 6 balls. The team with the highest total after 8 overs wins. The Board organises local festivals around the County from which the winners and runners-up go through to the County Final.

Inter Cricket

Inter Cricket is a format for secondary schools, created to bridge the gap between Kwik cricket and hardball cricket. It can be played indoors or outdoors. Each team has 6-8 players, including a wicket keeper who does not bowl. Normal cricket rules apply, with some variations – e.g. a batsman must retire on scoring 15 runs. Each team has two four over innings and 50% of the fielding side must bowl, with a maximum per bowler of 4 overs in total. Runs are scored by batters as normal – in addition the fielding side score 3 runs per wicket taken. The team with the highest combined batting and fielding score wins. The Board organises local festivals around the County from which the winners and runners-up go through to the County Final.
